Modern methods of treatment for inflammatory acne vulgaris take into account triggering factors involved in an individual and the severity of a particular condition. Exfoliation For mild to moderate acne, exfoliation is sometimes used to help shed the dead skin cells to clarify the hair follicle openings and prevent the accumulation of sebum. This helps prevent inflammation and prevents bacteria buildup. Exfoliation is a process of shedding the outer layer of the skin using a mechanical or chemical. The mechanical method usually uses a brush or a cloth that is slightly abrasive. This helps unblock clogged pores and prevent the accumulation of sebum. The chemical method usually involves a liquid agent containing one or both glycolic acid and salicylic acid. Of these, dermatologists usually prescribe the method of chemical peel as a treatment for acne vulgaris because rubbing the skin often leads to further irritation. Benzoyl Peroxide Benzoyl peroxide is also the active ingredient in creams and gels and is probably the most common treatment for inflammatory acne vulgaris. It is a reliable treatment, because not only is a keratolytic, also acts as an oxidizer and it is similar to mild bleach. These characteristics of benzoyl peroxide make it one of the most popular treatments for acne vulgaris because bacteria do not develop resistance against it. Cortisone Injections If a case of acne vulgaris consists of large grains or not responding to treatments, cortisone injections may be used. Cortisone is used directly in the grains, effectively reducing the redness and swelling in a short period of time. This is often the preferred treatment for patients who do not want any scars, which often results from surgery. Antibiotics Antibiotics such as tetracycline, erythromycin and clindamycin may also be prescribed, either as ointments or oral medications. They are equally effective, although some patients reported some side effects when taking oral antibiotics, such as stomach pain or possible reactions against other medications. For small areas, such as the face and neck, topical antibiotics can be used. If inflammatory acne vulgaris appears in a much wider area, may be impractical to use topical antibiotics, oral antibiotics are as stated in their place. Topical treatments are often used twice daily after washing, whereas oral treatment taken once or twice daily, depending on the doctor's recommendation. The only drawback is that it causes heat damage to skin, has the risk of producing hyper-pigmentation and is also fairly expensive. Hormonal treatment regimes hormonal form of birth control pills with estrogen / progestin combination may be effective for some female patients. Other pills containing a combination of estrogen and cyproterone also been successful in some cases.
